Leslie Wagner, Liberty Mutual Insurance

Board Member of the Month | June 2017

When you were a child what job did you want to
have when you grew up?

I wanted to be an astronaut! I was always looking at the night sky, finding constellations and trying to figure out which lights were stars and which were planets. My dad had a telescope and I used to spend hours looking at the moon with the different lenses, trying to see where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed. I met Buzz at a charity event once and it was one of the coolest experiences.
How long have you been a member of IASIU? How did you first get involved?

I have been a member of IASIU since 2008 when I joined SIU with Safeco Insurance.  My first meeting was a little dramatic – there was a heated debate about some kind of training between some of the members. I am proud to say that since then, my chapter – Puget Sound Special Investigators – have become a cohesive unit that works well together and we generally have a solid turn out to meetings and trainings.  I got involved in my chapter early on as chapter secretary and after a few years became president. I enjoyed that leadership position for many years and only recently stepped down so I could focus on the international board, which has been a phenomenal experience so far!
What’s something most members may not know about you?

That I am pretty sure I should have been born in the 1800s! I am a seamstress. Odd right? I can sew and I have made a full tuxedo before (in college for the drama department). I have also made dancing gowns for my mother who was into competitive ballroom dancing. I can also knit. I don’t know, if the zombie apocalypse ever comes, I might be a good person to keep around.

What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

1. Don’t say the first thing that comes into your head. This is actually just true of life. Take a moment and breathe, then reply.
2. Imagine anything you put in a file in 64 font type blown up in front of a jury. If you can’t or don’t want to see that, then watch what you say in a file.
3. ‘It doesn’t matter what I believe, it only matters what I can prove.”  - Tom Cruise, A Few Good Men. For SIU, this pretty much sums up what we do.

Do you have an office nickname? What is it?

Probie, from NCIS. I am the ‘newest’ member of the SIU team but at 9 years I feel like that should go away. Every year I bring it up that maybe we don’t need to call me that anymore. The other investigators look at me and laugh, shake their heads and walk away. I’ll keep trying though!

Leslie currently serves on the IASIU Board of Directors and also serves on the Editorial, Education, Seminar, Ethics, Chapters and Website committees.
