Sean Z. Serafin, USAA

Board Member of the Month | April 2018

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

I grew up in a small farm town called Canby, Oregon. I moved to California when I was 16 and spent most of my life at the beach. Now I’m serving military families in San Antonio, TX.

When you were a child what job did you want to have when you grew up?

I wanted to be an actor and actually was in a small mini-series as a kid where my sister was lost, and search and rescue was trying to find her.  Apparently, I wasn’t very good; it never was aired.

What's your favorite part about your work?

Supporting those who protect our country is a great honor and I’m love seeing the way we rally as "One Team" to protect and restore their lives.

How long have you been a member of IASIU?

I’ve been a member since about 2000. My first involvement was at the IASIU conference in Orlando.

What is your proudest moment as an IASIU board member?

I’m really proud of the changes we’ve been able to initiate in the last several years bringing discipline, strategy and transparency to the organization to better serve the members.

What are three career lessons you've learned thus far?

  • You’re only as good as those you can inspire to join you.
  • Admit readily when you make a mistake and don’t make the same one repeatedly.
  • Be genuine.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Motorcycle riding, traveling and virtual reality.

Who are your heroes?

Those who put themselves at risk, without hesitation to protect other people.

Tell us a little about your family.

My parents were both police officers and I grew up with a younger brother and sister. I’m married to Wendy, a Navy veteran, fitness consultant and fellow motorcycle rider.

Sean serves on the IASIU Board of Directors and also serves on the Constitution & Bylaws, Education, Finance and Organizational Improvement committees.
