This presentation gives attendees a baseline understanding of what different programs are available following a major disaster and how they can impact an insurance fraud investigation. Because of the unique aspects of disasters, the agencies and emotions involved, it is important for a fraud investigator to have a baseline understanding of what is at play during a disaster both internal and external to their organization.
Further, this presentation will place an emphasis on the insurance carrier’s role in spotting and prosecuting fraud through duplication of benefits and price gouging after a disaster. Current statutes and case law will be examined to illustrate the tools available for investigation and prosecution of post-disaster fraud against FEMA, insurance carriers, the National Flood Insurance Program, and individual consumers.
